Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is widely used in structural, functional and comparative genomics, as well as in evolutionary and population biology, to study the structure and polymorphism of genes and other genomic regions. Ribosomal DNA (rDNA) is of special interest for these studies, because it contains practically all types of genomic sequences, including both evolutionarily conserved (coding) and variable (noncoding) spacer regions with a high content of repeats of different types.
