2I/Borisov is the first-ever observed interstellar comet (and the second detected interstellar object). It was discovered on 30 August 2019 and has a heliocentric orbital eccentricity of ~ 3.35, corresponding to a hyperbolic orbit that is unbound to the Sun. Given that it is an interstellar object, it is of interest to compare its properties -- such as composition and activity -- with the comets in our Solar System. This study reports low-resolution optical spectra of 2I/Borisov. The spectra…
Gas-phase Modeling of the Cometary Coma of Interstellar Comet 2I/Borisov
Comet 2I/Borisov is the first interstellar comet observed in the solar system, providing a unique opportunity to understand the physical conditions that prevailed in a distant unknown planetary
The Population of Interstellar Objects Detectable with the LSST and Accessible for In Situ Rendezvous with Various Mission Designs
The recently discovered population of interstellar objects presents us with the opportunity to characterize material from extrasolar planetary and stellar systems up close. The forthcoming Vera C.
A colour portrait of the interstellar comet 2I/Borisov
Activity of the first interstellar comet 2I/Borisov around perihelion: results from Indian observatories
Comet 2I/Borisov is the first true interstellar comet discovered. Here we present results from observational programs at two Indian observatories, 2 m Himalayan Chandra Telescope at the Indian
Constraints on the Occurrence of ‘Oumuamua-Like Objects
At present, there exists no consensus in the astronomical community regarding either the bulk composition or the formation mechanism for the interstellar object 1I/2017 U1 (‘Oumuamua). With the goal
Gaseous atomic nickel in the coma of interstellar comet 2I/Borisov.
Spectroscopic observations of atomic nickel vapour in the cold coma of 2I/Borisov at a heliocentric distance of 2.322 astronomical units are reported, in line with the recent identification of this atom-as well as iron-in the cold comae of Solar System comets17.
The similarity of the interstellar comet 2I/Borisov to Solar System comets from high-resolution optical spectroscopy
Aims. 2I/Borisov hereafter 2I is the first visibly active interstellar comet observed in the solar system, allowing us for the first time to sample the composition of a building block from another
Constraining the orientation of the spin axes of extrasolar minor bodies 1I/2017 U1 (‘Oumuamua) and 2I/Borisov
Context. The orientation of the spin axis of a comet is defined by the values of its equatorial obliquity and its cometocentric longitude of the Sun. These parameters can be computed from the

Carbon Chain Depletion of 2I/Borisov
The composition of comets in the solar system come in multiple groups thought to encode information about their formation in different regions o fthe outer protosolar disk. The recent discovery of
Characterization of the Nucleus, Morphology, and Activity of Interstellar Comet 2I/Borisov by Optical and Near-infrared GROWTH, Apache Point, IRTF, ZTF, and Keck Observations
We present visible and near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations of interstellar object 2I/Borisov taken from 2019 September 10 to 2019 November 29 using the GROWTH, the APO ARC 3.5 m
Detection of a Water Tracer in Interstellar Comet 2I/Borisov
We present high spectral resolution optical spectra obtained with the ARCES instrument at Apache Point Observatory showing detection of the [OI]6300 A line in interstellar comet 2I/Borisov. We employ
Pre-discovery Activity of New Interstellar Comet 2I/Borisov beyond 5 au
Comet 2I/Borisov, the first unambiguous interstellar comet ever found, was discovered in 2019 August at ~3 au from the Sun on its inbound leg. No pre-discovery detection beyond 3 au has yet been
Searching for water ice in the coma of interstellar object 2I/Borisov
Aims. Interstellar objects passing through our Solar System offer a rare opportunity to probe the physical and chemical processes involved in solid body and planet formation in extrasolar systems.
The Nucleus of Interstellar Comet 2I/Borisov
We present high resolution imaging observations of interstellar comet 2I/Borisov (formerly C/2019 Q4) obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope. Scattering from the comet is dominated by a coma of

FLAMINGOS-2 Infrared Photometry of 2I/Borisov
2I/Borisov is the second interstellar object (ISO) after 'Oumuamua (Meech et al. 2017), but differs from 'Oumuamua drastically with its extensive cometary activity. A key ingredient to understand the
