The detectability of a deviation from metronomic timing--of a small local increment in interonset interval (IOI) duration--in a musical excerpt is subject to positional biases, or "timing expectations," that are closely related to the expressive timing (sequence of IOI durations) typically produced by musicians in performance (Repp, 1992b, 1998c, 1998d).
