We discuss statistical techniques for detecting and quantifying bimodality in astronomical datasets. We concentrate on the KMM algorithm, which estimates the statistical significance of bimodality in such datasets and objectively partitions data into sub-populations. By simulating bimodal distributions with a range of properties we investigate the sensitivity of KMM to datasets with varying characteristics. Our results facilitate the planning of optimal observing strategies for systems where… Expand
Spectra of globular clusters in the Sombrero galaxy: evidence for spectroscopic metallicity bimodality
We present a large sample of over 200 integrated-light spectra of confirmed globular clusters (GCs) associated with the Sombrero (M104) galaxy taken with the Deep Imaging Multi-Object SpectrographExpand
Kinematic subpopulations in dwarf spheroidal galaxies
We present new spectroscopic data for 26 stars in the recently discovered Canes Venatici I (CVn I) dwarf spheroidal galaxy, obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph North (GMOS-N) on theExpand
New Insights from HST Studies of Globular Cluster Systems. I. Colors, Distances, and Specific Frequencies of 28 Elliptical Galaxies
We present an analysis of the globular cluster systems of 28 elliptical galaxies using archival WFPC2 images in the V and I bands. The V-I color distributions of at least 50% of the galaxies appearExpand
Evidence of Substructure in the Cluster of Galaxies A3558
We investigate the dynamical properties of the cluster of galaxies A3558 (Shapley 8). Studying a region of 1 deg2 (~3 Mpc2) centered on the cluster cD galaxy, we have obtained a statisticallyExpand
Secondary Globular Cluster populations
This study is motivated by two facts: 1. The formation of populous star cluster systems is widely observed to accompany violent star formation episodes in gas-rich galaxies as e.g. those triggered byExpand
Due to its proximity (9 Mpc) and the strongly bimodal color distribution of its spectroscopically well-sampled globular cluster (GC) system, the early-type galaxy NGC 3115 provides one of the bestExpand
The SLUGGS Survey: kinematics for over 2500 globular clusters in 12 early-type galaxies
We present a spectro-photometric survey of 2522 extragalactic globular clusters (GCs) around twelve early-type galaxies, nine of which have not been published previously. Combining space‐based andExpand
The Globular Cluster System of NGC 5128. II. Ages, Metallicities, Kinematics, and Formation
We present a study of the nearby postmerger giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 (Centaurus A), in which we use the properties of its globular cluster (GC) and planetary nebula (PN) systems to constrainExpand
Astroinformatics-based search for globular clusters in the Fornax Deep Survey
The potential of a multidisciplinary approach to identify globular clusters (GCs) in the Fornax cluster of galaxies taking advantage of multi-band photometry produced by the VLT Survey Telescope using automatic self-adaptive methodologies is demonstrated. Expand
Substructure analysis of selected low-richness 2dFGRS clusters of galaxies
Complementary one-, two-, and three-dimensional tests for detecting the presence of substructure in clusters of galaxies are applied to recently obtained data from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. TheExpand

Journal of Classification 11 : 5-36 ( 1994 ) The MAP Test for Multimodality
We introduce a test for detecting multimodality in distributions based on minimal constrained spanning trees. We define a Minimal Ascending Path Spanning Tree (MAPST) on a set of points as a spanningExpand
Finding Groups in Data: An Introduction to Chster Analysis
This book make understandable the cluster analysis is based notion of starsmodern treatment, which efficiently finds accurate clusters in data and discusses various types of study the user set explicitly but also proposes another. Expand

IN his review of my book “Statistical Methods in Electrical Engineering” (Nature, March 19, p. 484), Mr. F. Downton criticizes my statement that Bayes' theorem is controversial. The heading of theExpand
