We investigate X-ray emission properties of the peculiar X-ray source θ2 Ori A in the Orion Trapezium region using more than 500 ks of HETGS spectral data in the quiescent state. The amount of exposure provides tight constraints on several important diagnostics involving O, Ne, Mg, and Si line flux ratios from He-like ion triplets, resonance line ratios of the H- and He-like lines, and line widths. Accounting for the influence of the strong UV radiation field of the O9.5V star, we can now place…

Discovery of x-ray emission from young suns in the small magellanic cloud
We report the discovery of extended X-ray emission within the young star cluster NGC 602a in the Wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) based on observations obtained with the Chandra X-Ray

Highlights are presented that illustrate how observations using Chandra have deepened, and in some instances revolutionized, the understanding of topics as diverse as protoplanetary nebulae; massive stars; supernova explosions; pulsar wind ne Bulae; the superfluid interior of neutron stars; accretion flows around black holes; and properties of dark matter and dark energy.

X-Ray Variability in the Young Massive Triple θ2 Orionis A
• Physics
• 2006
Massive stars rarely show intrinsic X-ray variability. One exception is θ2 Ori A, which has shown strong variability over the last 5 years. We observed a large outburst of the X-ray source with the
X-Ray Modeling of Very Young Early-Type Stars in the Orion Trapezium: Signatures of Magnetically Confined Plasmas and Evolutionary Implications
• Physics

The Orion Trapezium is one of the youngest and closest star-forming regions within our Galaxy. With a dynamic age of ~3 × 105 yr, it harbors a number of very young hot stars, which likely are on the
Chandra spectroscopy of the hot star β Crucis and the discovery of a pre-main-sequence companion
In order to test the O star wind-shock scenario for X-ray production in less luminous stars with weaker winds, we made a pointed 74-ks observation of the nearby early B giant, β Crucis (β Cru; B0.5
High-Resolution Chandra Spectroscopy of τ Scorpii: A Narrow-Line X-Ray Spectrum from a Hot Star
Long known to be an unusual early-type star by virtue of its hard and strong X-ray emission, τ Scorpii poses a severe challenge to the standard picture of O-star wind-shock X-ray emission. The
X-Ray-emitting Young Stars in the Orion Nebula
The Orion Nebula Cluster and the molecular cloud in its vicinity have been observed with the ACIS-I detector on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory with 23 hr exposure in two observations. We detect
X-Ray Emission from Early-Type Stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster
The X-ray properties of twenty ~1 Myr old O, B, and A stars of the Orion Trapezium are examined with data from the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP). On the basis of simple theories for X-ray
