Destruction mechanisms for interstellar dust
@article{Draine1979DestructionMF, title={Destruction mechanisms for interstellar dust}, author={Bruce T. Draine and Edwin Salpeter}, journal={The Astrophysical Journal}, year={1979}, volume={231}, pages={438-455} }
Destruction rates are estimated for interstellar dust grains as a function of size and composition of the grains, and the type of region in which the grain is located. Several idealized models of the interstellar medium are considered. The destruction mechanisms examined include sputtering and grain-grain collisions in interstellar shocks, sputtering and sublimation in H II regions, photodesorption by UV, sputtering by cosmic rays, and sublimation during a supernova radiation pulse. Sublimation…

Dust Destruction in the Interstellar Medium
- Physics, Geology

Grains are injected into the interstellar medium (ISM) from evolved stars and supernovae; in addition, supernova ejecta may condense onto pre-existing grains before becoming well-mixed with the…
Destruction of Interstellar Dust

Interstellar dust is an important component of the interstellar medium. Dust grains are the dominant opacity source and thus regulate the radiative transfer in the interstellar medium. Besides the…

Supernova remnant (SNR) shock waves are the main place where interstellar dust grains are destroyed. However, the dust destruction efficiency in nonradiative shocks is still not well known. One way…
The Dynamics, Destruction, and Survival of Supernova-formed Dust Grains

Observations have demonstrated that supernovae efficiently produce dust. This is consistent with the hypothesis that supernovae and asymptotic giant branch stars are the primary producers of dust in…
Grain destruction in interstellar shock waves

Interstellar shock waves can erode and destroy grains present in the shocked gas, primarily as the result of sputtering and grain-grain collisions. Uncertainties in current estimates of sputtering…
Interstellar Depletion onto Very Small Dust Grains

We consider the depletion of elements from the interstellar gas onto a population of very small dust grains. Adopting a grain model in which ~4% of the cosmic C abundance is in grains with radii ≤10…

Dust is an essential component of the interstellar medium (ISM) and plays an important role in many different astrophysical processes and phenomena. Traditionally, dust grains are known to be…
Dust Sputtering by Reverse Shocks in Supernova Remnants

We consider the sputtering of dust grains, believed to be formed in cooling supernovae ejecta, under the influence of reverse shocks. In the regime of self-similar evolution of reverse shocks, we can…
DESTRUCTION OF INTERSTELLAR DUST IN EVOLVING SUPERNOVA REMNANT SHOCK WAVES

Supernova generated shock waves are responsible for most of the destruction of dust grains in the interstellar medium (ISM). Calculations of the dust destruction timescale have so far been carried…

Context. There is a long-standing conundrum in interstellar dust studies relating to the discrepancy between the time-scales for dust formation from evolved stars and the apparently more rapid…
