Abstract A large proportion of the walls of the planned large hadron collider (LHC) vacuum chamber will be maintained at cryogenic temperatures and hence, could form effective cryopumps for the residual gas. The passage of a proton beam through the machine induces bombardment of the internal walls by various particles, including energetic ions which arise from ionisation of residual gases.
