Our research aims to develop interactive, social agents that can coach people to learn new tasks, skills, and habits. In this article, we focus on coaching sedentary, overweight individuals (i.e., “trainees”) to exercise regularly. We employ adaptive goal setting in which the intelligent health coach generates, tracks, and revises personalized exercise goals for a trainee. The goals become incrementally more difficult as the trainee progresses through the training program. Our approach is model…
AI Coach for Battle Royale Games
TLDR
The study results showed that a player’s acceptance of the top three coaching tips is associated with 4-7% improvement in expected player skill measurement, and that players who naturally accepted the top suggestions exhibit significant improvement in skill compared to players who did not.

TLDR
The common model of cognition (CMC) is used as a framework for unifying several behavior change theories that are known to be useful in human–human coaching and a set of interactive system desiderata based on the CMC-based view of behavior change are motivated.
Summarizing Behavioral Change Goals from SMS Exchanges to Support Health Coaches
TLDR
It is shown that information captured by dialogue acts can help to improve the goal extraction results and is a step towards building a virtual assistant health coach to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Using virtual representations in mHealth application interventions for health-related behaviour change: A systematic review (Preprint)
UNSTRUCTURED Many mobile health application interventions include virtual representations of the self in varying forms, such as agents, or avatars to initiate behaviour change. This review aimed
Acceptable Planning: Influencing Individual Behavior to Reduce Transportation Energy Expenditure of a City
TLDR
This work introduces COPTER - an intelligent travel assistant that evaluates multi-modal travel alternatives to find a plan that is acceptable to a person given their context and preferences, and proposes a formulation for acceptable planning that brings together ideas from AI, machine learning, and economics.

Challenges of Human-Aware AI Systems
TLDR
It is argued that the quest for human-aware AI systems broadens the scope of AI enterprise, necessitates and facilitates true inter-disciplinary collaborations, and can go a long way towards increasing public acceptance of AI technologies.
Exploring How to Personalize Travel Mode Recommendations For Urban Transportation
TLDR
A pair of human studies explore what factors people consider to make decisions about their travel and indicate that people’s mobility decisions incorporate considerably more information than current applications support.
Creating New Technologies for Companionable Agents to Support Isolated Older Adults
TLDR
A real-time architecture was developed to use a virtual agent or a robot interchangeably to interact via dialog and gesture with a human user to support isolated older adults in their homes.
Creating New Technologies for Companionable Agents to Support Isolated Older Adults
TLDR
Developing capabilities for (on-screen) virtual agents and robots to support isolated older adults in their homes and a real-time architecture was developed to use a virtual assistant for this purpose.
Digital Behaviour Change Interventions to Break and Form Habits
TLDR
This work critically review the main theories and models used in the research to analyse their application to designing effective habitual behaviour change interventions, and synthesises these theories into an explanatory framework, the Habit Alteration Model, and outlines the state of the art.
Mechanism design for social good
Across various domains---such as health, education, and housing---improving societal welfare involves allocating resources, setting policies, targeting interventions, and regulating activities. These
