Microfluidic devices are becoming more common and essential to a range of technologies. In their Perspective, [Ottino and Wiggins][1] discuss recent results in an important aspect of this field: micromixing. In contrast to everyday fluids, fluids flowing in small structures are dominated by viscous effects. This in turn makes mixing difficult. One approach for designing optimal mixing devices comes from the world of pure mathematics. In particular, a tool called a "linked twist map" offers the…

TLDR
It is shown that enhanced micromixing can be achieved in topologically simple and easily fabricated planar 2D microchannels by simply introducing curvature and changes in width in a prescribed manner.
Design for mixing using bubbles in branched microfluidic channels
This letter describes a method for producing chaotic transport trajectories in planar, microfluidic networks prepared by standard, single-step lithography and operated with a steady-state inflow of
Quantitative spatial mapping of mixing in microfluidic systems.
TLDR
This work focuses on miniaturizing the mixing process, which has been identified as a major hurdle in the performance and development of microfluidic devices.
A soft-lithographed chaotic electrokinetic micromixer for efficient chemical reactions in lab-on-chips
Mixing is one of the basic functions which automated lab-on-chips require for the effective management of liquid samples. In this paper we report on the working principle, design, fabrication and
1 FUNDAMENTALS OF MICROFLUIDICS DEVICES
Microfluidics is a term that describes the research discipline dealing with transport phenomena at microscopic length scales (typically 1–500mm) and components and techniques used to control and
A scalable active micro-mixer for biomedical applications
TLDR
This work presents a geometrically scalable active micro-mixer suitable for biomedical and bioengineering applications and potentially assimilable in a lab-on-chip, and characterize the mixing performance in terms of Reynolds, Strouhal and Péclet numbers in order to establish a practical range of operating conditions for the micro- Mixer.

Milliseconds microfluidic chaotic bubble mixer
In this study, we report a rapid microfluidic mixing device based on chaotic advection induced by microbubble–fluid interactions. The device includes inlets for to-be-mixed fluids and nitrogen gas. A
A fast microfluidic mixer based on acoustically driven sidewall-trapped microbubbles
Due to the low Reynolds number associated with microscale fluid flow, it is difficult to rapidly and homogenously mix two fluids. In this letter, we report a fast and homogenized mixing device

ENGINEERING FLOWS IN SMALL DEVICES
TLDR
An overview of flows in microdevices with focus on electrokinetics, mixing and dispersion, and multiphase flows is provided, highlighting topics important for the description of the fluid dynamics: driving forces, geometry, and the chemical characteristics of surfaces.
Chaotic Mixer for Microchannels
TLDR
This work presents a passive method for mixing streams of steady pressure-driven flows in microchannels at low Reynolds number, and uses bas-relief structures on the floor of the channel that are easily fabricated with commonly used methods of planar lithography.
Microfluidic systems for chemical kinetics that rely on chaotic mixing in droplets
TLDR
This paper reviews work on a microfluidic system that relies on chaotic advection to rapidly mix multiple reagents isolated in droplets (plugs) and is particularly appropriate for chemical kinetics and biochemical assays.

TLDR
Most importantly for the design process, it is shown how the so–called linked twist maps function as a minimal picture of mixing, provide a mathematical structure for understanding the type of 2D flows that arise in many micromixers already built, and give conditions guaranteeing the best quality mixing.
Mixing in the shear superposition micromixer: three-dimensional analysis
TLDR
It is shown that for some values of parameters a simple model can be derived that clearly represents the flow nature and mixing is substantially improved with multiple side channels with oscillatory flows, whose frequencies are increasing downstream.
