Game AI designers must manage complex interactions between the AI character, the game world, and the player, while achieving their design visions. Computational co-creativity tools can aid them, but first, AI and HCI researchers must gather requirements and determine design heuristics to build effective co-creative tools. In this work, we present a participatory design study that categorizes and analyzes game AI designers’ workflows, goals, and expectations for such tools. We evince deep… Expand

Friend, Collaborator, Student, Manager: How Design of an AI-Driven Game Level Editor Affects Creators
TLDR
The design of the Morai Maker intelligent tool is discussed, which developed a game level design tool for Super Mario Bros.-style games with a built-in AI level designer and found that level designers vary in their desired interactions with, and role of, the AI. Expand
Exploring the Design-Space: The Authorial Game Evolution Tool Case-Study
TLDR
A case-study on the use of AGE, the Authorial Game Evolution approach, a creativity support tool designed to assist game designers shows AGE has potential for exploring the design-space, though issues remain before it is an effective medium for high-quality designs. Expand
Game Usability Heuristics (PLAY) for Evaluating and Designing Better Games: The Next Iteration
TLDR
This follow-up study focused on the refined list, Heuristics of Playability (PLAY), that can be applied earlier in game development as well as aiding developers between formal usability/playability research during the development cycle. Expand
Heuristic Evaluation for Gameful Design
TLDR
A set of 28 gamification heuristics aimed at enabling experts to rapidly evaluate a gameful system are presented, which are a new method to evaluate user experience in gameful interactive systems. Expand
HEURISTICS AND USABILITY GUIDELINES FOR THE CREATION AND EVALUATION OF FUN IN VIDEO GAMES
TLDR
The heuristics created in this study are a starting point for the construction of a standard list of game heuristic for use by the game development community. Expand
Fostering creativity in the mixed-initiative evolutionary dungeon designer
TLDR
Results show an overall positive evaluation of the tool's intuitiveness and capabilities for empowering game developers' creative skills during the design process of dungeons for adventure games, and allow us to identify upcoming challenges pattern-based mixed-initiative tools could benefit from. Expand
Towards pattern-based mixed-initiative dungeon generation
TLDR
The results demonstrate that the tool is able to control the generation of the different patterns with the aid of design pattern-related input parameters, as well as identifying a number of features a design patterns-based mixed-initiative tool could benefit from. Expand
Sentient Sketchbook: Computer-aided game level authoring
TLDR
The Sentient Sketchbook is introduced, a tool which supports a designer in the creation of game levels using map sketches to alleviate designer effort, and constrained novelty search via a two-population paradigm for generating alternatives to the author's design is introduced. Expand
User Experience Design for Inexperienced Gamers: GAP - Game Approachability Principles
TLDR
Game Approachability, in the context of game development, is defined as making games initially more friendly, fun, immersive, and accessible for those players who have the desire to play, yet do not always follow-through to actually playing the game. Expand
Mixed-initiative content creation
TLDR
This chapter discusses mixed-initiative systems for PCG, where both humans and software have agency and co-create content. Expand
