Updated descriptions and measurements for the eggcases of 10 rajiform and three scyliorhinid species occurring in the shelf seas around the British Isles are given, based on museum material, specimens collected during the 'Great Eggcase Hunt' (a Shark Trust recording project), and specimens obtained from fishery surveys. Quantitative data are given for Amblyraja radiata (n = 94), Dipturus batis (n = 24), D. cf. intermedia (n = 33), Leucoraja naevus (n = 94), Raja brachyura (n = 53), R. clavata…

Description of egg capsules of Rasptail Skate Rostroraja velezi (Chondrichthyes: Rajiformes: Rajidae) from northern Peru

Nine egg capsules of the Rasptail Skate (Rostroraja velezi) were collected from their southernmost distributional range in northern Peruvian waters for their description. Egg capsules had a glossy

Phylogenetic relationship of catshark species of the genus Scyliorhinus (Chondrichthyes, Carcharhiniformes, Scyliorhinidae) based on comparative morphology

The monophyly of the subfamily Scyliorhininae is supported as well as of the genus ScylIORhinus, which is proposed to be the sister group of Cephaloscyllium.

Diversity of the egg tertiary membranes in some elasmobranch species and comments on the actual yolk-sac viviparous reproductive mode

After fertilization, elasmobranch eggs (mostly megalecithal) are encapsulated in a tertiary membrane of different complexity, in the oviducal gland. The gross morphological characteristics of this

Twins! Microsatellite analysis of two embryos within one egg case in oviparous elasmobranchs

The first cases of twins in three species of oviparous elasmobranchs are reported: the undulate ray, the nursehound, and the small-spotted catshark; the genetic relationships between the twins in S. stellaris, and S. canicula are investigated using microsatellite markers.

First confirmed complete incubation of a flapper skate (Dipturus intermedius) egg in captivity

The egg's prolonged embryonic development raises concerns about flapper skate eggs' vulnerability to anthropogenic disturbance.

On the presence of the Endangered white skate Rostroraja alba in Sardinian waters

The white skate Rostroraja alba is assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as Endangered globally and is now considered rare in the Mediterranean. This species has never been

Spatio‐temporal dynamics of the common skate species complex: Evidence of increasing abundance

The critically endangered common skate species complex is a large‐bodied and long‐lived batoid, which has experienced local extirpations and population declines over the past century mainly due to

An identification key for Chondrichthyes egg cases of the Mediterranean and Black Sea

Chondrichthyan egg cases are important elements for species-specific identification and also provide a valuable aid in determining a species spatial distribution, as well as for defining spawning a...

On Cassino beach, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, thousands of hatched cases of Rajoidei (suborder of oviparous skates) are brought by the tides being exposed on the seashore and the occurrence frequency of the present taxa is analyzed.
