The taxonomy of the common guppy, Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859, is reviewed and the closely related Campoma guppy, P. wingei n. sp., is described. Formerly, the common guppy was not judged to be closely related to any other species of Poecilia, but the new species is the second species to be allocated in the subgenus Acanthophacelus Eigenmann, 1907. The recognition of P. wingei results from observed character displacement, i.e., on the interaction between two closely related species in a…

Description of Poecilia (Acanthophacelus) obscura n. sp., (Teleostei: Poeciliidae), a new guppy species from western Trinidad, with remarks on P. wingei and the status of the "Endler's guppy"
- Biology
- 2009
A mitochondrial DNA-sequence based molecular phylogenetic analysis revealed the status of the new species as a separate taxon, Poecilia obscura, which is described from the Oropuche system, Trinidad and can be distinguished by morphometrics and gonopodial characteristics from these two species, although the ranges for all values overlap.

This study describes the life histories of six species within the genus Poecilia that includes the subgenera Micropoecilia and Acanthophacelus and demonstrates that extensive placentotrophy and superfetation, the ability to simultaneously carry more than one developing brood, have evolved within this clade.

The authors' findings are consistent with only partial genetic isolation between the two geographic regions and indicate that the geographic barrier of Cordillera de la Costa has not played an important role in strengthening the incomplete pre-zygotic reproductive barrier between Cumaná and common guppy.
