Abstract Accurate long-term global data sets are essential for achieving better understanding of the Earth's climate system and for modelling its complex interactions and feedback mechanisms. The High Resolution Infrared Sounder and the Microwave Sounding Unit (HIRS2/MSU) observations readily offer a unique opportunity to establish a global self-consistent data set of more than ten climate parameters extending over a decade in time.
