Empirical research has shown performance improvement of many different technological domains occurs exponentially but with widely varying improvement rates. What causes some technologies to improve faster than others do? Previous quantitative modeling research has identified artifact interactions, where a design change in one component influences others, as an important determinant of improvement rates. The models predict that improvement rate for a domain is proportional to the inverse of the…

Testing the science/technology relationship by analysis of patent citations of scientific papers after decomposition of both science and technology

This work offers evidence that patent cluster emergence can, but does not usually, precede the emergence of related scientific topics, and the overall structure of the links found between scientific categories and technological domains is many-to-many rather than focused indicating a science-fostered mechanism for fairly broad “spillover”.

Steps toward Quantifying Advancement in Space Exploration

A group of simplistic models and metrics for measuring performance of success of projects of NASA and related work by others for other applications such as Moore’s Law for different types of advances in technology is reviewed.

Modeling of technological performance trends using design theory

A simple model is presented that provides an explanatory foundation for these phenomena based upon the inventive design process and assumes that invention – novel and useful design – arises through probabilistic analogical transfers that combine existing knowledge by combining existing individual operational ideas to arrive at new individual operating ideas.

Do Real Output and Real Wage Measures Capture Reality? The History of Lighting Suggests Not

Historical studies of the growth in real wages and output depend upon the accurate measure of the price trends of goods and services. Over long periods of time, the consumption bundle has changed
