Fear of pain has been linked strongly to the development of dental anxiety and to avoidance of dental treatment. Studies indicate that memory of dental pain is “reconstructed” over time. He found that highly anxious patients tended to overestimate the pain they would feel prior to dental procedures, and also overestimate the pain experienced, when asked to recall it later.
