BACKGROUND Previous studies of family history of alcoholism (FHA) in college students have typically relied on dichotomous indices of paternal drinking. This study examined the prevalence of FHA and its effects on alcohol use and problems using a density measure in a sample (n = 408) of college students. METHODS Undergraduate students completed an anonymous survey in exchange for course credit. Data was collected between 2005 and 2006. RESULTS Using a density measure of FHA, we observed an…
The Association of Impulsivity and Family History of Alcohol Use Disorder on Alcohol Use and Consequences.
TLDR
These findings suggest that having both a family history of AUD and high BIS poor self-regulation is more strongly associated with alcohol-related consequences in the interpersonal and impulse control domains.
False identification use among college students increases the risk for alcohol use disorder: results of a longitudinal study.
TLDR
False ID use may contribute to AUD risk by facilitating more frequent drinking, and the potential public health significance of policies that enforce sanctions against false ID use is highlighted.
Familial loading for alcoholism and offspring behavior: mediating and moderating influences.
TLDR
Findings support previously proposed but untested pathways in etiologic models of alcoholism and show the potentially important role of active parenting in reducing the expression of inherited vulnerability to alcoholism in childhood.
Prevalence and correlates of alcohol and other substance use disorders in young adulthood: A population-based study
TLDR
The cross-sectional analyses suggested that the association between behavioral and affective factors and SUD was only partly accounted for by other correlates, such as early initiation of substance use and parental alcohol problems.
Self-regulation, alcohol consumption, and consequences in college student heavy drinkers: a simultaneous latent growth analysis.
TLDR
It is suggested that lower self-regulation ability functions as a risk factor for experiencing alcohol-related consequences and attenuates naturally occurring reductions in alcohol use and consequences over time for heavier drinking college students.
Alcohol Use and Stress in University Freshmen - A Comparative Intervention Study of Two Universities
TLDR
It is established that high stress and university setting was associated with dropout from university studies, while symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as hazardous drinking were not, and both primary and secondary interventions targeting hazardous drinking and stress have one-year effects in university freshmen.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of parental problem drinking reported by a national sample of college students and to examine the relations between such reports and
A prospective, high-risk study of the relationship between tobacco dependence and alcohol use disorders.
TLDR
Comorbid AUDs and TD did not significantly affect the likelihood of recovery from either disorder, and two general models of AUD/TD comorbidity were supported: a shared vulnerability model and a reciprocal influence model.
Familial density of alcoholism and onset of adolescent drinking.

    Journal of studies on alcohol
  • 1999
TLDR
Age of onset to begin drinking has been shown in general population studies to predict the likelihood of developing alcohol/abuse/dependence problems and the Cox proportional hazards analysis revealed that the onset could be predicted by a positive familial loading of alcoholism and extraversion.
Gender differences in the development of substance-related problems: the impact of family history of alcoholism, family history of violence and childhood conduct problems.
TLDR
Gender differences in the relative importance of FHV as a risk factor in the developmental course leading to problems with drugs and violence among individuals with alcohol-related problems enrolled in treatment for substance abuse or dependence are examined.
Characteristics of children of alcoholics: putative risk factors, substance use and abuse, and psychopathology.
TLDR
There were few Gender X Family History interactions; the effects of family history of alcoholism were similar for men and women and when gender effects were found, they showed greater family history effects for women.
Response to alcohol in females with a paternal history of alcoholism
TLDR
The results of the present study suggest that FHP women may have a reduced response to alcohol on some measures, but FHN women report greater positive effects on other measures.
Genetic differences in alcohol sensitivity and the inheritance of alcoholism risk.
TLDR
Men (but not women) at increased genetic risk of alcohol dependence (assessed by MZ co-twin's history ofalcohol dependence) exhibited reduced alcohol sensitivity, and associations with parental alcoholism were inconsistent.
The effects of familial risk, personality, and expectancies on alcohol use and abuse.
TLDR
The results suggest 2 different biopsychosocial mechanisms that elevate risk for abuse in the offspring of alcoholics and social deviance proneness and an excitement/pleasure seeking path.

Family history as a predictor of alcohol dependence.
TLDR
The effects of various levels of positive family history of alcoholism on the probability of past year alcohol dependence were investigated using a general population sample of 23,152 drinkers and did not vary among population subgroups as defined by age, race, gender, and poverty.
