The conservation of gorillas (Gorilla spp.) and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) depends upon knowledge of their densities and distribution throughout their ranges. However, information about ape populations in swamp forests is scarce. Here we build on current knowledge of ape populations by conducting line transect surveys of nests throughout a reserve dominated by swamp forest: the Lac Télé Community Reserve in northern Congo. We estimated gorilla and chimpanzee densities, distributions across…

Ape Abundance and Habitat Use in the Goualougo Triangle, Republic of Congo
Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) and western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) populations in central Africa are rapidly declining as a result of disease epidemics, commercial bushmeat
Comparing ape densities and habitats in northern Congo: surveys of sympatric gorillas and chimpanzees in the Odzala and Ndoki regions
TLDR
The results indicated that even the largest remaining ape populations in intact and protected forests are susceptible to sudden and dramatic declines, and the importance of intensifying monitoring efforts and further refinement of ape survey methods is emphasized.
Western lowland gorilla density and nesting behavior in a Gabonese forest logged for 25 years: implications for gorilla conservation
The tropical forests of the Congo Basin constitute biodiversity refuges that still hold large numbers of species, including endemic and endangered vertebrates. Along with several key species, the
Preliminary bonobo and chimpanzee nesting by habitat type in the northern Lac Tumba Landscape, Democratic Republic of Congo
Abstract Knowing how habitat determines the distribution of greatapes is essential for understanding their ecology and con-servation requirements. Habitats in the northern LacTumba Landscape where
Survey of Raphia swamp forest, Republic of Congo, indicates high densities of Critically Endangered western lowland gorillas Gorilla gorilla gorilla
Abstract The Critically Endangered western lowland gorilla Gorilla gorilla gorilla is found at high density in the swamp forests of Lac Télé Community Reserve, northern Republic of Congo. Preliminary
Factors Influencing Density and Distribution of Great Ape Nests in the Absence of Human Activities
TLDR
There were substantial differences between the findings and those for nearby sites, demonstrating the utility of small-scale comparisons to further understand the factors determining chimpanzee and gorilla densities within and between sites and the limitations of nest surveys.
Density of herbaceous plants and distribution of western gorillas in different habitat types in south-east Cameroon
The study of forest herb availability improves knowledge of ecology and conservation of gorillas that depend on such herbs. Density patterns of herbs and location of western gorilla nest sites were
Ground Night Nesting in Chimpanzees: New Insights from Central Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) in South-East Cameroon
TLDR
A 24-month marked nest count survey in La Belgique, Cameroon found no influence of leopard/elephant presence, but a possible influence of lack of nesting trees is found, and suggests chimpanzees visit swamps in the dry season for relief from hunting pressure and to consume Uapaca spp.
Distinguishing between the nests of sympatric chimpanzees and gorillas
Summary 1 Our current inability to estimate precisely the population sizes of chimpanzees and gorillas across much of the Congo Basin has been detrimental to the development of conservation
Ranging behavior and territoriality in chimpanzees at Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda
Obtaining accurate and reliable estimates of territory size is important to understand the behavior, ecology, and conservation of chimpanzees. Various methods have been used to estimate chimpanzee

Hunting pressure on chimpanzees and gorillas in the Motaba River area, northeastern Congo
An extensive survey was conducted in the Motaba River Area in north eastern Congo. It was based on interviews and line transect surveys. The following results were obtained: (1) Both chimpanzees and
Population density and nesting behaviour of lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in the Ngotto forest, Central African Republic
TLDR
Compared with the gorilla population of the nearby Dzanga-Sangha forest, the population density of gorillas at Ngotto was lower but the proportion of nests found above ground was much higher and it is suggested that these differences were the result of the scarcity of herbaceous vegetation in the Ngotto forest.
Population Density of Chimpanzees and Gorillas in the Petit Loango Reserve, Gabon: Employing a New Method to Distinguish Between Nests of the Two Species
We studied the vegetation and population density of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) and gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in the Petit Loango Reserve, Gabon. The study site consists mainly
Nationwide census of gorilla (gorilla g. gorilla) and chimpanzee (Pan t. troglodytes) populations in Gabon
TLDR
Gabon's large areas of undisturbed primary forest offer exceptional potential for conservation, not only of gorillas and chimpanzees, but also of the intact tropical rain forest ecosystems which they inhabit.
Census of gorillas in northern Republic of Congo
TLDR
The limited sample presented shows that gorillas are widespread and common in northern Congo, even in the swamp forests previously considered unsuitable as gorilla habitat, and it is probable that Congo holds the largest population of gorillas in Africa after Gabon.
Status and conservation of primates in Odzala National Park, Republic of the Congo
A survey of diurnal primate populations was carried out in Odzala National Park, Republic of the Congo, over 3 months in 1994 and 2 months in 1995. The park contains a high diversity and
Preliminary assessment of the impacts of human activities on gorillas Gorilla gorilla gorilla and other wildlife at Dzanga-Sangha Reserve, Central African Republic
Abstract The aim of this study was to make preliminary assessments of the effects of human activities on the gorillas and other wildlife in the Dzanga-Ndoki Park and broader Dzanga-Sangha Dense
Relationship between chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) density and large, fleshy‐fruit tree density: Conservation implications
TLDR
A predictive trend was found between chimpanzee nest density and large, fleshy‐fruit tree density, which may offer a quick, reasonably reliable method of estimating potential chimpanzee densities in previously unsurveyed habitats and may be used to evaluate the suitability of possible re‐introduction sites.
Habitat alteration, hunting and the conservation of folivorous primates in African forests
Abstract The colobus monkeys and gorillas of African forests share a strong tendency to depend on foliage during lean seasons. In many areas, both kinds of primate are threatened by habitat
