We have recently demonstrated that mammalian mitochondria contain an ATP-dependent, vanadate-sensitive pathway for the complete degradation of mitochondrial proteins. An ATP-dependent endoprotease active against [3H-methyZ]casein and [‘4C-methyZ]globin but not ‘261-insulin has been isolated from rat liver mitochondria by a combination of ion exchange chromatography and gel filtration.
