Seeds of mountain birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh. ssp. tortuosa (Ledeb.) Nyman) were sown on permanent plots in three contrasting habitats close to the birch tree-limit in Central Sweden. The habitats differed mainly in regard to the length of the growth period, as determined by the pattern of local snow-accumulation.
