Professor Delitzsch at great self-sacrifice interrupted his special Sumerological investigations in order to prepare the present work,' because he regarded this task as a necessary service to Sumerology. It must be many years before a complete and satisfactory analysis can be made of all the existing Sumerian material, and, recognizing this fact, the author decided to present to scholars at least the foundation of a Sumerian grammar.
