The most serious hazards in geotechnical excavation problems are associated with collapse of the ground. The latter often responds to excavation with some delay. In water-bearing soils of low-medium permeability, the excavation may initially be stable but then fail after a period of time (the “stand-up time”). The present paper investigates the transient stability of a simple geotechnical problem by means of a 2D FEM analysis.
