Subjects with echolucent carotid plaques have an increased risk of ischemic cerebrovascular events independent of degree of stenosis. Low plasma lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity promotes a proatherogenic lipid profile, and delayed chylomicron clearance is a risk factor for atherosclerosis.
