Kalman varieties of tensors are algebraic varieties consisting of tensors whose singular vector k-tuples lay on prescribed subvarieties. They were first studied by Ottaviani and Sturmfels in the context of matrices. We extend recent results of Ottaviani and the first author to the partially symmetric setting. We describe a generating function whose coefficients are the degrees of these varieties and we analyze its asymptotics, providing analytic results à la Zeilberger and Pantone. We emphasize…

Equations and syzygies of some Kalman varieties

- Mathematics
- 2012

Given a subspace L of a vector space V, the Kalman variety consists of all matrices of V that have a nonzero eigenvector in L. Ottaviani and Sturmfels described minimal equations in the case that dim…

Equations of Kalman varieties

- Mathematics
- 2017

The Kalman variety of a linear subspace is a vector space consisting of all endomorphisms that have an eigenvector in that subspace. We resolve a conjecture of Ottaviani and Sturmfels and give the…

Eigenschemes of Ternary Tensors

- MathematicsSIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry
- 2021

We study projective schemes arising from eigenvectors of tensors, called eigenschemes. After some general results, we give a birational description of the variety parametrizing eigenschemes of…

On the number of Singular Vector Tuples of Hyper-Cubical Tensors

Shmuel Friedland and Giorgio Ottaviani's beautiful constant term expression for the number of singular vector tuples of generic tensors is used to derive a rational generating function for these…

A theory of such nearest point maps of a real algebraic variety with respect to Euclidean distance from the perspective of computational algebraic geometry is developed.

The Asymptotic Number of Simple Singular Vector Tuples of a Cubical Tensor

- Mathematics

S. Ekhad and D. Zeilberger recently proved that the multivariate generating function for the number of simple singular vector tuples of a generic $m_1 \times \cdots \times m_d$ tensor has an elegant…

Abstract We study E-eigenvalues of a symmetric tensor f of degree d on a finite-dimensional Euclidean vector space V, and their relation with the E-characteristic polynomial of f. We show that the…

In this paper we investigate some fundamental geometric and numerical properties ofduality for projective varieties inPkN=PN. We take a point of view which in our opinion is somewhat moregeometric…

The Number of Singular Vector Tuples and Uniqueness of Best Rank-One Approximation of Tensors

- Mathematics, Computer ScienceFound. Comput. Math.
- 2014

The uniqueness of best approximations for almost all real tensors in the following cases is shown: rank-one approximation; rank- one approximation for partially symmetric tensors (this approximation is also partially asymmetric); rank-(r_1,\ldots ,r_d) approximation for d-mode tensors.

Matrices with eigenvectors in a given subspace

The Kalman variety of a linear subspace in a vector space consists of all endomorphism that possess an eigenvector in that subspace. We study the defining polynomials and basic geometric invariants…
