A bstractIn this work we discuss charged rotating black holes in AdS5 × S5 that degenerate to extremal black holes with zero entropy. These black holes have scaling properties between charge and angular momentum similar to those of Fermi surface operators in a subsector of $ \mathcal{N} = 4 $ SYM. We add a massless uncharged scalar to the five dimensional supergravity theory, such that it still forms a consistent truncation of the type IIB ten dimensional supergravity and analyze its…
Stability of rapidly rotating charged black holes in AdS5 ? S5
We study the stability of charged rotating black holes in a consistent truncation of type IIB supergravity on AdS5 × S5 that degenerate to extremal black holes with zero entropy. These black holes
Fermi surface behavior in the ABJM M2-brane theory
We calculate fermionic Green’s functions for states of the three-dimensional ABJM M2-brane theory at large N using the gauge-gravity correspondence. We embed extremal black brane solutions in
The first law of thermodynamics and 2d CFT descriptions for near-extremal and near-EVH black holes
In this thesis we investigate the quantum aspects of black holes near extremality. In particular we seek evidence that a near-extremal black hole has a microscopic description in terms of a two
Probing the EVH limit of supersymmetric AdS black holes
Extremal black holes in general dimensions are well known to contain an AdS 2 factor in their near-horizon geometries. If the extremal limit is taken in conjunction with a specific vanishing horizon
Fermi surfaces in N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory
We investigate and classify Fermi surface behavior for a set of fermionic modes in a family of backgrounds holographically dual to N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory at zero temperature with two distinct
Near-extremal vanishing horizon AdS5 black holes and their CFT duals
A bstractWe consider families of charged rotating asymptotically AdS5 Extremal black holes with Vanishing Horizon (EVH black holes) whose near horizon geometries develop locally AdS3 throats. Using
Fermionic response in a zero entropy state of N = 4 super-Yang-Mills
We analyze fermionic response in the geometry holographically dual to zero-temperature N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory with two equal nonvanishing chemical potentials, which is characterized by a
Minding the Gap in N=4 Super-Yang-Mills
We analyze fermionic response in the geometry holographically dual to zero-temperature N = 4 Super-Yang-Mills theory with two equal nonvanishing chemical potentials, which is characterized by a
Minding the gap inN = 4 Super-Yang-Mills
We analyze fermionic response in the geometry holographically dual to zero-temperatureN = 4 Super-Yang-Mills theory with two equal nonvanishing chemical potentials, which is characterized by a
Chiral 2D “strange metals” from N=4$$ \mathcal{N}=4 $$ SYM
A bstractFamiliar field theories may contain closed subsectors made out of only fermions, which can be used to explore new and unusual phases of matter in lower dimensions. We focus on the fermionic

TOPICAL REVIEW: Quasinormal modes of black holes and black branes
Quasinormal modes are eigenmodes of dissipative systems. Perturbations of classical gravitational backgrounds involving black holes or branes naturally lead to quasinormal modes. The analysis and
