The Butler-Volmer (BV) equation links the current flux crossing an electrochemical interface to the electric potential drop across it with the assumption of Arrhenius kinetics and the Boltzmann factor. Applying the semilogarithmic Tafel analysis in which the logarithm of current is plotted vs. the overpotential one expects straight lines from which the fundamental reaction rate of the kinetic process can be computed. However, some Li-ion battery data, which is the focus here, show nonlinear…

A new perspective on the electron transfer: recovering the Butler-Volmer equation in non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

TLDR
Very general relations of Butler-Volmer structure are derived which are based on a rigorous non-equilibrium thermodynamic model and allow for adaption to a wide variety of electrochemical systems.

Marcus-Hush-Chidsey kinetics at electrode-electrolyte interfaces.

TLDR
This work explicitly account for the density functional theory-calculated density of states numerically in calculating electrochemical reaction rates for a variety of electrode-electrolyte interfaces and identifies the asymmetry in reaction rates as a function of discharge/charge naturally within this approach.

Li-O2 Kinetic Overpotentials: Tafel Plots from Experiment and First-Principles Theory.

TLDR
It is suggested that minimizing the cell impedance is a more important problem than minimizing the kinetic overpotentials to develop higher current Li-air batteries.

Charge transfer kinetics at the solid-solid interface in porous electrodes.

TLDR
A simple method is reported to extract the charge transfer rates in carbon-coated LiFePO4 porous electrodes from chronoamperometry experiments, obtaining curved Tafel plots that contradict the Butler-Volmer equation but fit the Marcus-Hush-Chidsey prediction over a range of temperatures.

Kinetics of lithium electrodeposition and stripping.

TLDR
This work shows the use of Marcus-Hush-Chidsey (MHC) kinetics to accurately predict the Tafel curve data from the work of Boyle et al. and finds significant deviation in the limiting currents associated with reaction kinetics for the three different rate laws for conditions of fast charge and discharge relevant for eVTOL and EV, respectively.
