Summary Adverse reactions to food (ARF) have been recently classified according to pathogenetic mechanism. ARF are divided into toxic and non toxic reactions. The former can occur in all exposed individuals whereas the latter depend on the individual's susceptibility to a food. The symptoms of toxic food reaction may be indistinguishable from those of non toxic reactions. Non toxic reactions are divided into immune mediated and non immune mediated.
