This study aimed to explore the associations of remembered childhood caregiving and defense mechanisms with adult attachment styles in a nonclinical sample. Furthermore, we investigated which defenses are associated with specific insecure attachment styles. Participants were 238 university students (mean age = 28.11…

The Relationship Between Defense Mechanisms and Attachment as Measured by Observer-Rated Methods in a Sample of Depressed Patients: A Pilot Study
TLDR
The results imply a longitudinal relationship between defenses and change in attachment-related characteristics over the course of treatment in a depressed sample and warrant further research about the relationship between defense mechanisms and attachment during psychotherapy.

It is concluded that in normal settings sensitivity is an important but not exclusive condition of attachment security, and several other dimensions of parenting are identified as playing an equally important role.
Adult attachment style and the perception of others: the role of projective mechanisms.
TLDR
In 3 reported studies the authors examined attachment-style differences in the perception of others and the hypothesis that projective mechanisms underlie these differences, indicating that whereas anxious-ambivalent persons' impression formation, memory retrieval, and inferences about others reflected the projection of their actual-self-traits, avoidant persons' responses reflected the projections of their unwanted- Self.
Defense Mechanisms of Pregnant Mothers Predict Attachment Security, Social-Emotional Competence, and Behavior Problems in Their Toddlers.

The study findings suggest that defensive functioning in parents preparing for and parenting toddlers influences the parent-child attachment relationship and social-emotional adjustment in the earliest years of life.
Psychophysiology in attachment interviews: converging evidence for deactivating strategies.
TLDR
Subjects employing deactivating attachment strategies showed marked increases in skin conductance levels from baseline to questions asking them to recall experiences of separation, rejection, and threat from parents, and this finding supports the notion that individuals employing deactivate attachment strategies experience conflict or inhibition during the Attachment Interview.
