Abstract

Candidates from the three main political parties all insisted during the general election campaign that they would protect front line services, should they win power. The same politicians also tried to outbid each other with promises that key decisions would be devolved to health professionals, with patients given a greater say in how services should be delivered. Few speeches about the future of the NHS omitted the words 'patient choice'.
