Sixty consecutive patients undergoing lumbar laminotomy or laminectomy underwent preoperative and postoperative compression ultrasonography of the lower extremities to detect acute deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Compression stockings were the only method of prophylaxis. Three patients (5%) developed postoperative calf DVT.
