We present the results of long-slit and multiaperture spectroscopy of faint galaxies in the field of the z = 1.049 quasar 3C 212. We show that an apparently aligned optical feature beyond the northwest radio lobe has a redshift z = 0.928, and a similarly aligned feature just beyond the southeast radio lobe has a redshift z = 1.053, quite close to that of the quasar. While the northwest optical component is extremely well aligned with the radio jet and has a morphology that is very similar to… Expand

Evidence against a redshift z > 6 for the galaxy STIS123627+621755
Optical and near-infrared observations of the source STIS123627+621755 are reported, finding a detection of the galaxy at 6,700 Å and a non-detection at a wavelength of 1.2 µm, contrary to expectations for z ≈ 6.68. Expand
The Field surrounding NGC 7603: Cosmological or non-cosmological redshifts?
We present new observations of the field surrounding the Seyfert galaxy NGC 7603, where four galaxies with different redshifts - NGC 7603 (z = 0.029), NGC 7603B (z = 0.057) and two fainter emissionExpand
Radio-optical alignments in a low radio luminosity sample
We present an optically-based study of the alignment between the radio axes and the optical major axes of eight z 0.7 radio galaxies in a 7C sample. The radio galaxies in this sample are 20-timesExpand
The Density of Lyα Emitters at Very High Redshift
We describe narrowband and spectroscopic searches for emission-line star-forming galaxies in the redshift range 3-6 with the 10 m Keck II Telescope. These searches yield a substantial population ofExpand
Serendipitously Detected Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field
We present a catalog of 74 galaxies detected serendipitously during a campaign of spectroscopic observations of the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF) and its environs. Among the identified objects areExpand
Mapping Extremely Low Metallicity Galaxies to Redshift One
We describe the results of a narrowband search for ultrastrong emission line galaxies (USELs) with EW(Hβ) ≥ 30 A. A total of 542 candidate galaxies are found in a one-half square degree survey usingExpand
One-Line Redshifts and Searches for High-Redshift Lyα Emission*
We report the serendipitous discovery of two objects close in projection with fairly strong emission lines at long wavelength (? ~ 9190 ?). One (A) seems not to be hosted by any galaxy brighter thanExpand
Chandra Detection of a Type II Quasar at z = 3.288*
We report on observations of a type II quasar at redshift z ¼ 3:288, identified as a hard X-ray source in a 185 ks observation with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory and as a high-redshift photometricExpand
The brightest apparent magnitude examples of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are studied here in X-ray, optical, infrared, and radio wavelengths. It is found that they have associatedExpand
Chandra Observation of 3C 212: A New Look at the X-Ray and Ultraviolet Absorbers
The red quasar 3C212 (z = 1.049) is one of the most distant and most luminous AGN which has shown evidence of an X-ray warm absorber. In order to further investigate this unusual quasar, we usedExpand

Deep WFPC2 and Ground-Based Imaging of a Complete Sample of 3C Quasars and Galaxies.
We present the results of an HST and ground-based imaging study of a complete 3C sample of z ~ 1 sources, including 5 quasars and 5 radio galaxies. We have resolved continuum structure around all ofExpand
New Insight on Galaxy Formation and Evolution from Keck Spectroscopy of the Hawaii Deep Fields
We present the results of spectroscopic studies with the LRIS spectrograph on Keck of two of the Hawaii deep survey fields. The 393 objects observed cover an area of 26.2 square arcmin and constituteExpand
Alignment of radio and optical orientations in high-redshift radio galaxies
The results of a VLA (Very Large Array) radio and CCD (charge-coupled device) optical imaging survey of ultra-steep spectrum radio sources confirm their association with faint and presumably distantExpand
Synthetic properties of starburst galaxies
We present the results of an extensive grid of evolutionary synthesis models for populations of massive stars. The parameter space has been chosen to correspond to conditions typically found inExpand
We have constructed a grid of models representing an H II region produced by an evolving starburst embedded in a gas cloud of the same metallicity. The models were produced with the spectral energyExpand
