In sequel to Moradi et al. [2009, ApJ, 690, L72], we employ two established numerical forward models (a 3D ideal MHD solver and MHD ray theory) in conjunction with time–distance helioseismology to probe the lateral extent of wave-speed perturbations produced in regions of strong, near-surface magnetic fields. We continue our comparisons of forward modeling approaches by extending our previous surface-focused travel-time measurements with a common midpoint deep-focusing scheme that avoids the… Expand

Comparison of Travel-Time and Amplitude Measurements for Deep-Focusing Time–Distance Helioseismology
The purpose of deep-focusing time–distance helioseismology is to construct seismic measurements that have a high sensitivity to the physical conditions at a desired target point in the solarExpand

Modeling the Subsurface Structure of Sunspots
While sunspots are easily observed at the solar surface, determining their subsurface structure is not trivial. There are two main hypotheses for the subsurface structure of sunspots: the monolithicExpand

Numerical Models of Travel-Time Inhomogeneities in Sunspots
We investigate the direct contribution of strong, sunspot-like magnetic fields to helioseismic wave travel-time shifts via two numerical forward models, a three-dimensional ideal MHD solver and MHDExpand
Validation of Helioseismology through Forward Modeling: Realization Noise Subtraction and Kernels
Through a series of numerical simulations of the near-surface acoustic wavefield of the Sun, we show the utility of the forward approach in local helioseismology. We demonstrate and apply a method toExpand
Sensitivity of Time-Distance Helioseismic Measurements to Spatial Variation of Oscillation Amplitudes. I. Observations and a Numerical Model
It is well known that the observed amplitude of solar oscillations is lower in sunspots than in quiet regions of the Sun. We show that this local reduction in oscillation amplitudes, combined withExpand
Contamination by Surface Effects of Time-Distance Helioseismic Inversions for Sound Speed beneath Sunspots
Using Doppler velocity data from the SOI/MDI instrument on board the SOHO spacecraft, we do time-distance helioseismic inversions for sound-speed perturbations beneath 16 sunspots observed inExpand
Time – Distance Modelling in a Simulated Sunspot Atmosphere
In time – distance helioseismology, wave travel times are measured from the cross-correlation between Doppler velocities recorded at any two locations on the solar surface. However, one of the mainExpand
Three-dimensional Inversion of Sound Speed below a Sunspot in the Born Approximation
We revise the inversion of acoustic travel times for the three-dimensional sound-speed structure below the solar NOAA Active Region 8243 of 1998 June. We benefit from recent progress in time-distanceExpand
Seismic Halos around Active Regions: A Magnetohydrodynamic Theory
Comprehending the manner in which magnetic fields affect propagating waves is a first step toward constructing accurate helioseismic models of active region subsurface structure and dynamics. Here weExpand
Observed Frequency Variations of Solar p-Mode Travel Times as Evidence for Surface Effects in Sunspot Seismology
Using helioseismic holography, we measure acoustic ( -mode) travel-time perturbations, observed within solar p active regions, as functions of frequency and phase speed. We find evidence for aExpand
