Abnormalities in the muscle dystrophin-glycoprotein complex are implicated in the molecular pathogenesis of various neuromuscular disorders. Weakening of the trans-sarcolemmal linkage between the actin membrane-cytoskeleton and the extracellular matrix appears to trigger destabilization of the muscle cell periphery.
