The month of onset, duration, and incidence of dental enamel hypoplasia and hypocalcification was determined in sub-adults from the Dickson Mounds (Illinois) skeletal series (A.D. 950-1300). The onset of enamel defects occurred predominantly during the intrauterine period, suggesting maternal stress. There are marked differences in survivorship and the duration of enamel disruption in those affected prenatally and postnatally. The relationship between these data and studies of adult dentition…
Decline in enamel hypoplasia in relation to fluoridation in Australians

TLDR
Fluidation of metropolitan water has emerged as the statistically strongest hypoplasia‐preventing factor and is thought to represent calcification disruption indicative of metabolic stress during development.
Enamel Hypoplasia in the Deciduous Teeth of Edo Japanese
TLDR
Results suggest that people in Edo City lived under highly stressful environment, with most of the enamel hypoplasia detected occurred postnatally, few occurring prenatally and perinatally.
A detailed study of enamel hypoplasia in a post-medieval adolescent of known age and sex
TLDR
This study used recently published histological data on the precise timing of tooth development to establish chronologies for growth disruptions and relates linear enamel hypoplasia to the incremental structures in the enamel surface, the perikymata, in order to investigate the timing of growth disturbances.
Enamel hypoplasia and age at weaning in 19th-century Florence, Italy.
TLDR
A sample representing a population of the Florence district of middle 19th century was studied and it was suggested that the age interval most affected was that between 1.5 and 3.5 years, suggesting that this distribution could reflect the gradual introduction of dietary supplements until weaning is complete.
Incidence and patterning of dental enamel hypoplasia among the Neandertals.
TLDR
The paucity of deciduous tooth DEH and M1 DEH, combined with generally increasing levels of DEH through later calcifying teeth, suggests that the stress was primarily nutritional, beginning at weaning and continuing through adolescence, implying significantly lower effectiveness for Neandertal foraging compared to that of modern humans.
Frequency and chronological distribution of dental enamel hypoplasia in enslaved African Americans: a test of the weaning hypothesis.
TLDR
While there appears to be a modest effect of early weaning stress, no direct relationship of peak frequencies to weaning age can be shown, raising questions about the attribution of peak hypoplasia frequencies to age at weaning or "post-weaning" stresses in previous paleopathological studies.
Deciduous enamel defects and caries susceptibility in a prehistoric Ohio population.

TLDR
The complete deciduous dentitions of 57 subadults from the Libben site, a large Late Woodland cemetery in Ottawa County, Ohio, were selected and results indicate a strong positive relationship between hypocalcifications and caries susceptibility.
Prevalence and age at development of enamel hypoplasias in Mexican children.
TLDR
The prevalence of enamel defects on the permanent teeth was up to tenfold greater than that found in studies of less marginal populations that used the FDI method, and the prevalence of defects in transverse zones suggests a peak frequency of hypoplasias during the second and third years for the Permanent teeth, corresponding to the age at weaning in this group.
Correspondence between enamel hypoplasia and odontometric bilateral asymmetry in Australian twins.
TLDR
Four aspects of enamel hypoplasia of the maxillary central incisor and mandibular canine were correlated with directional and fluctuating measures of bilateral odontometric asymmetry in a large panel of South Australian twins, suggesting that correspondence may be clearer in comparisons at the population rather than individual level.

Relationships suggest that at least moderate levels of malnutrition existed in Illinois Woodland populations, with a significant association between prenatal dental defects and bony evidence for anemia and infectious disease.
Age Distribution of Enamel Hypoplasia in Prehistoric California Indians
TLDR
The chronology of hypoplasia among prehistoric California Indians is described and permanent canines were used because they are less frequently lost postmortem than incisors, and they show less attrition than molars.
Prevalence and possible etiology of dental enamel hypoplasia.
TLDR
The reduction in the prevalence of enamel hypoplasia in the groups examined through time may be related to improved nutritional conditions and the elimination or decline of childhood diseases that have been implicated in this condition.

The data corroborate the hypothesis that the adoption of maize agriculture in the prehistoric American Midwest is associated with increased stress and suggest that Wilson bands are an indicator of the relative proportion of individuals who are high susceptibles in prehistoric populations.
Factors Associated with Linear Hypoplasia of Human Deciduous Incisors
TLDR
Linear hypoplasia of deciduous maxillary incisors was present in 31 of 73 Guatemalan children 2 to 3 years of age, whose medical histories were followed since birth and seemed to correlate with infections during the first month of life.

Review of the several processes involved in coronal odontogenesis suggests that such dimorphism is related to an absolutely longer period of amelogenesis for both deciduous and permanent dentitions.
