We review X-ray constraints on dark matter in giant elliptical galaxies $$({10}^{12}\,{M}_{\odot }\lesssim{M}_{vir} \lesssim1{0}^{13}\,{M}_{\odot })$$obtained using the current generation of X-ray satellites, beginning with an overview of the physics of the hot interstellar medium and mass modeling methodology. Dark matter is now firmly established in many galaxies, with inferred NFW concentration parameters somewhat larger than the mean theoretical relation. X-ray observations confirm that the… Expand

The Luminous X-Ray Halos of Two Compact Elliptical Galaxies
• Physics
• 2017
There is mounting evidence that compact elliptical galaxies (CEGs) are local analogs of the high-redshift "red nuggets" thought to represent progenitors of today's early-type galaxies (ETGs). WeExpand
The Extremely High Dark Matter Halo Concentration of the Relic Compact Elliptical Galaxy Mrk 1216
• Physics
• The Astrophysical Journal
• 2019
Compact elliptical galaxies (CEGs) are candidates for local analogs of the high-redshift "red nuggets" thought to represent the progenitors of today's early-type galaxies (ETGs). To address whetherExpand
THE ElIXr GALAXY SURVEY. II. BARYONS AND DARK MATTER IN AN ISOLATED ELLIPTICAL GALAXY
• Physics
• 2012
The Elliptical Isolated X-ray (ElIXr) Galaxy Survey is a volume-limited (<110 Mpc) study of optically selected, isolated, L * elliptical galaxies to provide an X-ray census of galaxy-scale (virialExpand
Constraining the Physical State of the Hot Gas Halos in NGC 4649 and NGC 5846
We present results of a joint \textit{Chandra}/\textit{XMM-Newton} analysis of the early-type galaxies NGC 4649 and NGC 5846 aimed at investigating differences between mass profiles derived fromExpand
X-ray shapes of elliptical galaxies and implications for self-interacting dark matter
• Physics
• 2021
Several proposed models for dark matter posit the existence of self-interaction processes that can impact the shape of dark matter halos, making them more spherical than the ellipsoidal halos ofExpand
The Entire Virial Radius of the Fossil Cluster RXJ1159+5531: II. Dark Matter and Baryon Fraction
• Physics
• 2016
In this second paper on the entire virial region of the relaxed fossil cluster RXJ1159+5531, we present a hydrostatic analysis of the hot intracluster medium (ICM). For a model consisting of ICM,Expand
Reconciling stellar dynamical and hydrostatic X-ray mass measurements of an elliptical galaxy with gas rotation, turbulence and magnetic fields
• Physics
• 2013
Recent hydrostatic X-ray studies of the hot interstellar medium (ISM) in early-type galaxies underestimate the gravitating mass as compared to stellar dynamics, implying modest, but significantExpand
TRACING THE GAS TO THE VIRIAL RADIUS (R 100) IN A FOSSIL GROUP
• Physics
• 2012
We present a Chandra, Suzaku, and ROSAT study of the hot intragroup medium (IGrM) of the relaxed fossil group/poor cluster RX J1159+5531. This group exhibits an advantageous combination of flatExpand
One Law To Rule Them All: The Radial Acceleration Relation of Galaxies
We study the link between baryons and dark matter in 240 galaxies with spatially resolved kinematic data. Our sample spans 9 dex in stellar mass and includes all morphological types. We consider (i)Expand
Effects of baryon mass loss on profiles of large galactic dark matter haloes
• Physics
• 2012
We perform controlled numerical experiments to asses the effect of baryon mass loss on the inner structure of large galactic dark matter (DM) haloes. This mass expulsion is intended to mimic both theExpand

OBSERVATIONAL AND THEORETICAL CONSTRAINTS ON SINGULAR DARK MATTER HALOS
