We consider one-dimensional propagation of quantum light in the presence of a block of material, with a full account of dispersion and absorption. The electromagnetic zero-point energy for some frequencies is damped (suppressed) by the block below the free-space value, while for other frequencies it is increased. We also calculate the regularized (Casimir) zero-point energy at each frequency and find that it too is damped below the free-space value (zero) for some frequencies. The total Casimir…

Critical review of quantum plasmonic models for finite-size media

Abstract We provide a critical analysis of some of the commonly used theoretical models to describe quantum plasmons in finite size media. We summarize the standard approach based on a Fano

Unidirectional invisibility and enhanced reflection of short pulses in quasi-PT-symmetric media.

If the medium is quasi-parity-time (PT)-symmetric in the vicinity of the exceptional point, the propagation manifests strong unidirectional reflection and invisibility and due to strong frequency selectivity, quasi-PT-Symmetric periodic layers manifest efficient filtering of back-radiation.

Observation of reflectionless absorption due to spatial Kramers–Kronig profile

As a fundamental phenomenon in electromagnetics and optics, material absorption has been extensively investigated for centuries. However, omnidirectional, reflectionless absorption in inhomogeneous

Theory of the strongly-damped quantum harmonic oscillator

We analyse the properties of a strongly-damped quantum harmonic oscillator by means of an exact diagonalisation of the full Hamiltonian, including both the oscillator and the reservoir degrees of

Casimir force in the presence of a medium

We investigate the Casimir effect in the presence of a medium by quantizing the electromagnetic field in the presence of a magnetodielectric medium using the path-integral technique. For a given

Landauer's principle in the quantum regime.

We demonstrate the validity of Landauer's erasure principle in the strong coupling quantum regime by treating the system-reservoir interaction in a thermodynamic way. We show that the initial

Field quantization in inhomogeneous anisotropic dielectrics with spatio-temporal dispersion

A quantum damped-polariton model is constructed for an inhomogeneous anisotropic linear dielectric with arbitrary dispersion in space and time. The model Hamiltonian is completely diagonalized by

How does Casimir energy fall? IV. Gravitational interaction of regularized quantum vacuum energy

Several years ago we demonstrated that the Casimir energy for perfectly reflecting and imperfectly reflecting parallel plates gravitated normally, that is, obeyed the equivalence principle. At that

Thermal energies of classical and quantum damped oscillators coupled to reservoirs

We consider the global thermal state of classical and quantum harmonic oscillators that interact with a reservoir. Ohmic damping of the oscillator can be exactly treated with a 1D scalar field

Hamiltonian treatment of the electromagnetic field in dispersive and absorptive structured media

We introduce a Hamiltonian formulation of electromagnetic fields in dispersive and absorptive structured media of arbitrary dimensionality; the Kramers-Kronig relations are satisfied by construction.

Laser cooling of a nanomechanical oscillator into its quantum ground state

The development of a coupled, nanoscale optical and mechanical resonator formed in a silicon microchip, in which radiation pressure from a laser is used to cool the mechanical motion down to its quantum ground state, paving the way for optical control of mesoscale mechanical oscillators in the quantum regime.

Quantum dynamics of the damped harmonic oscillator

The quantum theory of the damped harmonic oscillator has been a subject of continual investigation since the 1930s. The obstacle to quantization created by the dissipation of energy is usually dealt
