By applying an out-of-phase actuation at the boundaries of a uniform chain of granular particles, we demonstrate experimentally that time-periodic and spatially localized structures with a nonzero background (so-called dark breathers) emerge for a wide range of parameter values and initial conditions. We demonstrate a remarkable control over the number of breathers within the multibreather pattern that can be "dialed in" by varying the frequency or amplitude of the actuation. The values of the…

Direct numerical integration of the equations of motion is used to demonstrate the formation and evolution of the identified localized modes in energy-conserving and dissipative scenarios, including within settings that may be relevant to future experimental studies.
Nonlinear Waves in a Strongly Nonlinear Resonant Granular Chain

We explore a recently proposed locally resonant granular system bearing harmonic internal resonators in a chain of beads interacting via Hertzian elastic contacts. In this system, we propose the

Dark breathers in a normal dispersion optical microresonator

Breathers are localized waves, that are periodic in time or space. The concept of breathers is useful for describing many physical systems including granular lattices, Bose-Einstein condensation,
Linear and nonlinear dynamics of isospectral granular chains
• Mathematics
• 2017
We study the dynamics of isospectral granular chains that are highly tunable due to the nonlinear Hertz contact law interaction between the granular particles. The system dynamics can thus be tuned
Experimental Study of Nonlinear Resonances and Anti-Resonances in a Forced, Ordered Granular Chain
• Physics

We experimentally study a one-dimensional uncompressed granular chain composed of a finite number of identical spherical elastic beads with Hertzian interactions. The chain is harmonically excited by
On the nonexistence of degenerate phase-shift multibreathers in a zigzag Klein-Gordon model
• Mathematics

In this work, we study the existence of low amplitude four-site phase-shift multibreathers for small values of the coupling $\epsilon$ in Klein-Gordon (KG) chains with interactions longer than the
Bright breathers in nonlinear left-handed metamaterial lattices

In the present work, we examine a prototypical model for the formation of bright breathers in nonlinear left-handed metamaterial lattices. Utilizing the paradigm of nonlinear transmission lines, we
