The phototoxic fluoroquinolones ofloxacin, lomefloxacin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and BAYy 3118 have ionizable groups with pKa values close to neutrality. Different ionic species of these fluoroquinolones, therefore, partition in various compartments and organelles of living cells according to their ionic equilibria.
