The dust properties of all early-type galaxies imaged with the Planetary Camera of the Hubble Space Telescope in cycles I-III are examined. Dust is detected in 31 out of 64 galaxies, although the sample is biased against the detection of dust. From the distribution of observed axis ratios of the dust features it is inferred that 78%+/-16% of early-type galaxies contain nuclear dust. The detection rate in radio galaxies is higher (72%+/-16%) than in radio-quiet galaxies (33%+/-9%). In radio…
Study of dust and ionized gas in early-type galaxies
Abstract We present results of optical broad-band and narrow-band H α observations of a sample of forty nearby early-type galaxies. The majority of sample galaxies are known to have dust in various
The Dust-Radio Connection in 3CR Radio Galaxies
We investigate dust in the nuclear regions of radio galaxies on the basis of 120 images of 3CR radio galaxies in the redshift range 0 < z < 0.5, taken with the WFPC-2 on the Hubble Space Telescope.
A dichotomy in the orientation of dust and radio jets in nearby low-power radio galaxies
We examine the properties of central dust in nearby quiescent and active early-type galaxies. The active galaxies are low-power radio galaxies with Fanaroff & Riley type I or I/II radio jets. We
Dust and the Infrared Kinematic Properties of Early-Type Galaxies
We have obtained spectra and measured the stellar kinematics in a sample of 25 nearby early-type galaxies (with velocity dispersions from less than 100 km s-1 to over 300 km s-1) using the
Dust emission in early-type galaxies: The mid-infrared view
We present mid-infrared (MIR) maps for a sample of 18 early-type galaxies observed at 4.5, 6.7 and 15 µm with the ISOCAM instrument on board the ISO satellite with a 6 spatial resolution. We model
Survey of the ISM in early-type galaxies IV. The hot dust component ?
We present mid-IR photometric properties for a sample of 28 early-type galaxies observed at 6.75, 9.63 and 15 m with the ISOCAM instrument on board the ISO satellite. We nd total mid-IR luminosities
Dust evolution with active galactic nucleus feedback in elliptical galaxies
Abstract We have recently suggested that dust growth in the cold gas phase dominates the dust abundance in elliptical galaxies while dust is efficiently destroyed in the hot X-ray emitting plasma
WFPC2 Images of the Central Regions of Early-Type Galaxies.I. The Data
We present high-resolution R-band images of the central regions of 67 early-type galaxies obtained with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This
Central Structural Parameters of Early-Type Galaxies as Viewed with NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope*
We present surface photometry for the central regions of a sample of 33 early-type (E, S0, and S0/a) galaxies observed at 1.6 μm (H band) using the Hubble Space Telescope. Dust absorption has less of
Cold gas and dust: Hunting spiral-like structures in early-type galaxies
Observations of neutral hydrogen (HI) and molecular gas show that 50% of all nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs) contain some cold gas. Molecular gas is always found in small gas discs in the central
