Abstract

Following the early report of a superplastic elongation of > 100% in a 3 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia in 1986 by Wakai and colleagues from Japan; there have been numerous investigations of the mechanical behavior of superplastic zirconias and their allied composites. This report provides a broad overview of the deformation, densification, grain growth and fracture characteristics of a superplastic 3YTZ; all of these phenomena are linked by the common thread of diffusion.
