Cell death, including apoptotic and non-apoptotic cell death, is frequently observed in liver disease. Upon activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, mitochondria release not only apoptogenic cytochrome c but also mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) into the cytosol.
