DNA binds neutrophil elastase and mucus proteinase inhibitor as evidenced by affinity chromatography on elastase-Sepharose, inhibitor-Sepharose and DNA-cellulose. DNA is a potent hyperbolic inhibitor of elastase. The polynucleotide-enzyme complex is partially active on synthetic substrates and on elastin.
