This work describes our approach to creating a fast and low-cost sorting system. The goal of this work is to win the 2002 PennySort and Performance/Price sort. We have designed a sorting program called DMSort that is capable of more than double the performance of previously published results when run on our system configuration. This paper discusses the DMSort system alongside a discussion of topics relevant to PennySort and Performance/Price sort. In particular, the DMSort sorting algorithm…

Performance / Price Sort and PennySort
TLDR
This paper documents this and proposes that the PennySort benchmark be revised to Performance/Price sort: a simple GB/$ sort metric based on a two-pass external sort.
DIAPRISM Hardware Sorter — Sort a Million Records Within a Second —
TLDR
The DIAPRISM hardware sorter enables high-speed sorting on a commercial PC server and has achieved Datamation benchmark record, sorting a million 100-byte records in 0.998 second.
Datamation 2001: A Sorting Odyssey
TLDR
The implementation of WIND-SORT, which broke the Datamation record by roughly a factor of two, sorting 1 million 100-byte records in 0.48 seconds, has been identified: developing a fast remote execution service, conguring the cluster properly, and avoiding the potential ill-effects of occasionally faulty hardware.
A high-speed sorting procedure
TLDR
It is highly desirable to have a method with the speed characteristics of the merging by pairs and the space characteristics of sifting, if such a method were available, to sort twice as many items at one time in the machine and still do it at a reasonably high speed.
A measure of transaction processing power
TLDR
These benchmarks measure the performance of diverse transaction processing systems and a standard system cost measure is stated and used to define price/performance metrics.
