We have discovered nine ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) in the Virgo Cluster, extending samples of these objects outside the Fornax Cluster. Using the Two Degree Field (2dF) multifiber spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope, the new Virgo members were found among 1500 color-selected, starlike targets with 16: 0 < b(j) < 20.2 in a 2 degrees diameter field centered on M87 (NGC 4486). The newly found UCDs are comparable to the UCDs in the Fornax Cluster, with sizes less than or similar…
A large population of ultra-compact dwarfs and bright intracluster globulars in the fornax cluster
All the previously cataloged ultracompact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Fornax and Virgo clusters have 17.5 <b J < 20. Using the 2dF spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope, we have carried out
Internal Properties of Ultracompact Dwarf Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
We present new imaging and spectroscopic observations of six ultracompact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, along with reanalyzed data for five Fornax Cluster UCDs. These are the most
A Census of Ultra-Compact Dwarf Galaxies in Nearby Galaxy Clusters
Ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) are predominatly found in the cores of nearby galaxy clusters. Besides the Fornax and Virgo cluster, UCDs have also been confirmed in the twice as distant Hydra I
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey. XXXIV. Ultracompact Dwarf Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster
We present a study of ultra compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Virgo cluster based mainly on imaging from the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS). Using $\sim$100 deg$^{2}$ of $u^*giz$
The chemical composition of ultracompact dwarf galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax clusters
We present spectroscopic observations of ultracompact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Fornax and Virgo clusters made to measure and compare their stellar populations. The spectra were obtained on the
A large population of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies in the Hydra I cluster ?
Aims. We performed a large spectroscopic survey of compact, unresolved objects in the core of the Hydra I galaxy cluster (Abell 1060), with the aim of identifying ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs)
A search for ultra-compact dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus galaxy cluster ,
Aims. Our aim is to extend the investigations of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCD) beyond the well studied Fornax and Virgo clusters. Methods. We measured spectroscopic redshifts of about 400
Constraining ultracompact dwarf galaxy formation with galaxy clusters in the local universe
We compare the predictions of a semi-analytic model for ultracompact dwarf galaxy (UCD) formation by tidal stripping to the observed properties of globular clusters (GCs) and UCDs in the Fornax and
SPECTROSCOPIC METALLICITIES FOR FORNAX ULTRACOMPACT DWARF GALAXIES, GLOBULAR CLUSTERS, AND NUCLEATED DWARF ELLIPTICAL GALAXIES
Various formation channels for the puzzling ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) have been proposed in the last few years. To better judge some of the competing scenarios, we present spectroscopic
STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES OF ULTRA-COMPACT DWARF GALAXIES IN THE FORNAX AND VIRGO CLUSTERS
We present a detailed analysis of high-resolution two-band Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging of 21 ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax Clusters. The

The formation of ultracompact dwarf galaxies
Recent spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the Fornax Cluster reveal nearly unresolved 'star-like' objects with redshifts appropriate to the Fornax Cluster. These objects have intrinsic sizes
Ultracompact Dwarf Galaxies in the Fornax Cluster
By utilizing the large multiplexing advantage of the Two-degree Field spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope, we have been able to obtain a complete spectroscopic sample of all objects in a
GALAXY THRESHING AND THE FORMATION OF ULTRACOMPACT DWARF GALAXIES
Recent spectroscopic and morphological observational studies of galaxies around NGC 1399 in the Fornax Cluster have discovered several ultracompact dwarf galaxies with intrinsic sizes of similar to
Galaxy Threshing and Ultra-Compact Dwarfs in the Fornax Cluster
We have discovered a new type of galaxy in the Fornax Cluster: `ultra-compact' dwarfs (UCDs). The UCDs are unresolved in ground-based imaging and have spectra typical of old stellar systems. Although
Galaxy threshing and the origin of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster
A recent all-object spectroscopic survey centred on the Fornax cluster of galaxies has discovered a population of subluminous and extremely compact members, called 'ultra-compact dwarf' (UCD)
Compact Stellar Systems in the Fornax Cluster: Super-massive Star Clusters or Extremely Compact Dwarf Galaxies?
Abstract We describe a population of compact objects in the centre of the Fornax Cluster which were discovered as part of our 2dF Fornax Spectroscopic Survey. These objects have spectra typical of
The ACS Virgo Cluster Survey. VII. Resolving the Connection between Globular Clusters and Ultracompact Dwarf Galaxies
We investigate the connection between globular clusters and ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) by examining the properties of 10 compact, high-luminosity (-11.8 MV -10.8) objects associated with M87

Globular cluster candidates within the Fornax Cluster: Intracluster globulars?
We present the results of a search for globular clusters in the surroundings of 15 low surface brightness dwarf galaxies belonging to the Fornax Cluster, which was carried out on CCD images obtained
A possible formation scenario for the ultramassive cluster W3 in NGC 7252
The intermediate age star cluster W3 (age 300‐500 Myr) in NGC 7252 is the most luminous star cluster known to date with a dynamical mass estimate of 8±2·10 7 M⊙. With an effective radius of about
