Metalworking dies are made of high strength tool steels. These dies are subjected to repeated thermomechanical loading cycles. Fatigue, wear, and plastic deformation are the three major modes of inservice die failure, fatigue fracture being the most dominant one. Plane-strain fracture toughness (KIC) is the most important material property in the prediction and prevention of fracture, and in damage tolerance assessment.
