In this Ph.D. thesis, we study some aspects of strings and branes. We mainly focus on anomalous D-brane couplings and on non-supersymmetric branes. In Chapter 2, we illustrate three key concepts in a field theory context: duality, supersymmetry and anomaly inflow. Chapter 3 contains an introduction to string theory, emphasizing the concepts relevant to this thesis, like string scattering amplitudes and D-brane actions. In Chapter 4, we introduce the boundary state formalism and use it to…

D-brane boundary states in the pure spinor superstring

We study the construction of D–brane boundary states in the pure spinor formalism for the quantisation of the superstring. This is achieved both via a direct analysis of the definition of D–brane

Bosonic construction of superstring theory and related topics

This thesis splits into two parts. In the first part we introduce a bosonic construction of the ten-dimensional fermionic theories. This construction relies on a consistent truncation procedure which

Holography and related topics in string theory

This thesis covers research into the holographic entropy bound, the D-brane descent relations, and properties of AdS2 solutions in supersymmetric and nonsupersymmetric string theories. The first

We systematically revisit the description of D-branes on orbifolds and the classification of their charges via K-theory. We include enough details to make the results accessible to both physicists

Higher derivative brane couplings from T-duality

The Wess-Zumino coupling on D-branes in string theory is known to receive higher derivative corrections which couple the Ramond-Ramond potential to terms involving the square of the spacetime

Disc amplitudes, picture changing and space-time actions

A bstractWe study in detail the procedure for obtaining couplings of D-branes to closed string fields by evaluating string theory disc amplitudes. We perform a careful construction of the relevant

String entanglement and D-branes as pure states

We study the entanglement of closed strings degrees of freedom in order to investigate the microscopic structure and statistics of objects as D-branes. By considering the macroscopic pure state

Orbifold boundary states from Cardy's condition

Boundary states for D-branes at orbifold fixed points are constructed in close analogy with Cardy's derivation of consistent boundary states in RCFT. Comments are made on the interpretation of the

World-volume dynamics of D-branes in a D-brane background

Curvature terms in D-brane actions and their M theory origin

We derive the complete (curvature)2 terms of effective D-brane actions, for arbitrary ambient geometries and world-volume embeddings, at lowest order (disk-level) in the string-loop expansion. These

Non-BPS States and Branes in String Theory

We review the recent developments in our understanding of non-BPS states and branes in string theory. The topics include 1) construction of unstable non-BPS D-branes in type IIA and type IIB string

Type IIA D-branes, K theory, and matrix theory

We show that all supersymmetric Type IIA D-branes can be constructed as bound states of a certain number of unstable non-supersymmetric Type IIA D9-branes. This string-theoretical construction
