Experiments were conducted to evaluate the toxic effects ofmonocrotophos in ciliate models Paramecium caudatum and Oxytricha fallax. In acute toxicity studies higherconcentrations of monocrotophos caused marked increase in mobility of cells exhibiting rocking movements within two mins of exposure but were decreased after 30 mins. LC50 value by mortality curve for 3 hr acute toxicity test of Oxytricha fallax and Paramecium caudatum was found 307.744 +/- 33.27 mg l(-1) and 332.284 +/- 57.52 mg l… Expand
In vivo Cytotoxicity Assessment of Thiram: Physiological and Biochemical Changes in Paramecium sp.
The freshwater protozoan ciliate Paramecium sp. was used in order to assess the potential cytotoxic effects of Thiram, a dithiocarbamates fungicide. To estimate the impact of this fungicide, cellsExpand
Cytotoxicity of Potassium Salts of (+)- and (-) Usnic Acid for Paramecium caudatum
In the presence of (+)-UA and (-)-UA salts in a concentration range from 2 to 8 μM, the number of food vacuoles in ciliates decreased, which attested to a decrease in phagocytosis activity and the formation of oxidative stress under the action of high UA concentrations. Expand
Monocrotophos induced Biochemical and Histopathological alterations in the Kidney tissues of Mice
The present study investigated the effect of monocrotophos a commonly used organophosphate pesticide exposure in the kidney tissues of the swiss albino mice. Monocrotophos was administered at theExpand
Toxicological effect of DDT in Colpoda cucullus and its potential application in forming environmental biosensor
The main goal of this study was to determine the toxicological effect of DDT on the ciliate Colpoda cucullus and its potential use as a biological sensor for DDT-polluted soils. Toxicity bioassaysExpand
Studies on the effect of chlorpyrifos (organophosphate) and cypermethrin (synthetic pyrethroid) on the growth of Paramecium
Conclusively, both insecticides showed harmful effect to Paramecium and may disturb the aquatic ecosystem. Expand
A Comparative Study on The Acute Toxicity Bioassay of Dimethoate and Lambda-cyhalothrin and Effects on Thyroid Hormones of Freshwater Teleost Fish Labeo rohita (Hamilton)
Assessment of the acute toxicity of Dimethoate and Lambda-cyhalothrin on Labeo rohita fish shows significant difference from control fish (p < 0.05), and effects of thesetwo insecticides on serum T3, T4 and TSH were investigated under sub-lethal toxicities. Expand
Int. J. Biosci
During their passage into the human or animal body, most of xenobiotics are metabolized. The metabolites formed are eliminated primarily through the kidneys and therefore are found in wastewater.Expand
Ciliates as model organisms for the ecotoxicological risk assessment of heavy metals: A meta-analysis.
This study shows that most ciliates are more tolerant to heavy metal pollution than the standard test species used in ecotoxicological risk assessments, i.e., Raphidocelis subcapitata, Daphnia magna, and Onchornyncus mykiss, and Threshold concentrations derived from toxicity data for these species is expected to confer sufficient protection for the vast majority of ciliate species. Cytotoxic effects of delfin insecticide ( Bacillus thuringiensis ) on cell behaviour, phagocytosis, contractile vacuole activity and macronucleus in a protozoan ciliate Paramecium caudatum
Findings on phagocytosis, contractile vacuole activity and macronuclear changes indicate a potential physiological and cytogenetic effect of delfin on P. caudatum, which is suitable tools and tags for physiological, genotoxicity studies and risk assessment. Expand
Acute toxicity bioassay using Paramecium caudatum , a key member to study the effects of monocrotophos on swimming behaviour, morphology and reproduction
The results indicate that the Paramecium toxicity assay could be used as a complimentary system to rapidly elucidate the cytotoxic potential of insecticides. Expand
Toxicity and Bioaccumulation of Hexavalent Chromium in Green Paramecium, Paramecium bursaria
The effects of hexavalent chromium on the cell growth of green paramecium, Paramecium bursaria, were investigated and indicated the possibility of the use of P. Bursaria as a biomonitor and bioaccumulator for chromium contaminants in aquatic environments. Expand
