BACKGROUND Major risk factors for accelerated allograft arteriosclerosis include humoral and cellular immune response, hyperlipidemia, and viral infections. We demonstrated earlier that rat cytomegalovirus (RCMV) infection doubles smooth muscle cell proliferation and intimal thickening of rat aortic allografts.
