In this study, the morphology, cytology and crossability of amphidiploid hybrids (2n = 8x = 80; WWW′W′TTT′T′) between Nicotiana wuttkei × Nicotianatabacum were studied. An R1 progeny of the hybrids were produced through in vitro chromosome doubling of the N. wuttkei × N. tabacum cv. Wiślica amphihaploids. The resulting amphidiploids showed enough self-fertility to be perpetuated by self-pollination. The plants preserved their phenotypes and the number of chromosomes over subsequent R2–R4 selfed…
The Use of Nicotiana Species in Tobacco Improvement
TLDR
This review examines how and to what extent natural germplasm resources have been utilized in hybridization and introgression experiments over the past century, and focuses on individual Nicotiana species involved in interspecific hybrids with cultivated tobacco produced by sexual and asexual methods.
Efficient Chromosome Doubling of an Interspecific Hybrid Dendrobium Stardust ‘Fire Bird’ by Treatment of Amiprofos-methyl to Protocorm-Like Body
TLDR
To induce chromosome doubling, the protocorm-like bodies of a given variety were treated in vitro for 6 to 48 h with 10 to 160 mg L−1 amiprofos-methyl (APM) and plantlets with a swollen and shorter stem were observed after the APM treatment and these plants were also chromosome-doubled and became a distinctive morphological marker for the primary selection of chromosome- doubled plants.
New Cytogenetic Information of Wild Species and Cultivars in the Genus Epidendrum (Orchidaceae)
TLDR
The results from the present study suggest that the polyploid cultivars in this genus could have resulted from pollination involving unreduced gametes during breeding.
DRAWID: user-friendly java software for chromosome measurements and idiogram drawing
TLDR
DRAWID (DRAWing IDiogram), java-based cross-platforming program for chromosome analysis and idiogram construction, has number of advantages including a user-friendly interactive interface, possibility for simultaneous chromosome and FISH/GISH/banding signal measurement and idiograms drawing as well as number of useful functions facilitating the procedure of chromosome analysis.

Production and characterization of amphihaploid hybrids between Nicotiana wuttkei Clarkson et Symon and N. tabacum L
Nicotiana wuttkei Clarkson and Symon discovered in the 1990s in Australia may be of potential interest to breeders as it carries resistance to Peronospora hyoscyami de Bary. The crossability between
Bypassing prefertilization barriers to hybridization in Nicotiana using in vitro pollination and fertilization
TLDR
In vitro pollination of placenta attached ovules was useful in bypassing unilateral incongruity barriers for several Nicotiana interspecific hybrid combinations (N. amplexicaulis, N. benthamiana, and ‘Ky 17’ X N. repanda) and it appears that it may be possible to obtain asexual hybrids of N. arentsii or N. bonariensis with N. tabacum.
Hybrid fertility and aphid resistance in the cross Nicotiana tabacum x N. gossei
TLDR
Nicotiana gossei, a disease- and insect-resistance species, was hybridized with the cigar-wrapper variety of N. tabacum, ‘Florida 17’, and converted to a fertile amphiploid by treatment with colchicine.
Preferential elimination of repeated DNA sequences from the paternal, Nicotiana tomentosiformis genome donor of a synthetic, allotetraploid tobacco.
TLDR
The data demonstrate that genetic changes in synthetic tobacco were fast, targeted to the paternal N. tomentosiformis-donated genome, and some of the changes showed concordance with changes that presumably occurred during evolution of natural tobacco.
ldentification of Parental Chromosomes in the Interspecific Hybrids of Nicotiana rustica L. × N. tabacum L. and N. gossei Domin × N. tabacum L., Using Genomic in situ Hybridization
TLDR
Genomic in situ hybridization was carried out for mitotic cells of the interspecific hybrids of Nicotiana rustica L. tabacum L.tabacum and N. gossei, indicating that each parent could be discriminated and two chromosomes exhibited regions with weak hybridization signals, suggesting that interspecific translocations might have occurred between N. rustica and N- tabacu.
‘Hertwig Effect’ in plants: induced parthenogenesis through the use of irradiated pollen
TLDR
It is shown that parthenogenetic haploid and diploid maternal individuals may arise with the use of male gametes (pollen) treated with high doses of ionising radiation in plants, similar to that found in animals (“Hertwig Effect’).
Wild Nicotiana Species as a Source of Cytoplasmic Male Sterility in Nicotianatabacum
Abstract The results of our experiments executed to obtain tobacco male sterile lines through interspecific hybridization are summarized. Ten wild species from the genus Nicotiana: N. excelsior
A new tobacco cytoplasmic male sterile source from the hybrid combination Nicotiana longiflora Gav. and N. tabacum L. using in vitro techniques
TLDR
Genetic analysis indicated maternal inheritance of the flower type, which confirmed its nuclearcytoplasmic nature due to interaction with tobacco, and was preserved in BC2P2–BC6P2 progenies.

Floral Morphology and Some Other Characteristics of Iso-genomic Alloplasmics of Nicotianatabacum L.
TLDR
The extent of male organ modifications varied from complete absence of stamens to full male sterility in Zamojska 4, and the majority of the alloplasmics showed response to tentoxin that was compatible with the cytoplasm donor.
