Interspecific amphihaploid and amphidiploid hybrids between Nicotiana glauca Grah. (2n = 24) and N. tabacum L. (2n = 48) cultivars BY 103 and K 326 were analysed. F1 amphihaploids (2n = 36) were viable and completely self- and cross-sterile, and mostly univalents were present during meiosis (with pairing range from 0 to 5). In some meiocytes, meiotic irregularities were observed, such as sporadic chromatin bridges and formation of restitution nuclei. The resultant F1 hybrids were easily…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Meiosis and fertility in interspecific hybrids of Nicotiana tabacum L. ×N. glauca Grah. and their derivatives
TLDR
Male fertility disturbances did not correlate with the degree of female fertility upon pollination with N. tahacum, and true amphidiploids, in spite of quite high chromosome pairing during meiosis, were very different in pollen fertility, ranging from 0% to 85%.
High Pollen Sterility and 2n Pollen Grains in an Asynaptic 4x Cytotype (2n=48) of Solanum nigrum L.
TLDR
The course of meiosis in 8 of the 9 accessions among the 2x, 4x, 6x cytotypes was noticed to be perfectly normal resulting in very high pollen fertility, however, 1 accession of 4x cytotype scored from Palchan depicted irregular chromosomal behaviour during meiosis due to the presence of all 48 chromosomes as univalents.
Pollen viability and meiotic behaviour in intraspecific hybrids of Hydrangea aspera subsp. aspera Kawakami group x subsp. sargentiana
TLDR
Analysis of male meiosis made it possible to identify the origins with two major categories of meiotic aberrations: abnormal chromosome distribution (early chromosome migration at metaphase, lagging chromosomes at anaphase, micronuclei at telophase) and abnormal spindle orientation in metaphase II (tripolar, fused and parallel spindles), leading to the formation of dyads or triads.
Impaired Male Meiosis due to Irregular Synapsis Coupled with Cytomixis in a New Diploid Cytotype of Dianthus angulatus (Caryophyllaceae) from Indian Cold Deserts
TLDR
The occurrence of two plants showing impaired meiosis due to irregular synapsis and cytomixis collected from Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh (India) and the synaptic irregularities coupled with chromatin transfer in these plants seem to be responsible for the high pollen sterility and heterogeneously sized pollen grains.
Male meiosis, microsporogenesis and pollen grain study in Inula cuspidata C. B. Clarke (Asteraceae).
TLDR
Male meiosis, microsporogenesis and pollen grain studies have been made on 11 accessions of Inula cuspidata C. B. Clarke from the cold desert regions of the Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh, India and it is revealed that 2 bivalents are of comparatively large size.
Chromosome number, male meiosis and pollen fertility in selected angiosperms of the cold deserts of Lahaul-Spiti and adjoining areas (Himachal Pradesh, India)
TLDR
Harsh climatic conditions have caused various meiotic abnormalities in the majority of the plants, which has affected the genetic constitution and viability of male gametes and pollen sterility and pollen grains of variable sizes.
Spontaneous Occurrence of Structural Heterozygosity in ‘Buckwheat’ (Fagopyrum acutatum) from the Parvati Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India
Male meiotic studies carried out on the plants of Fagopyrum acutatum (Polygonaceae) collected from the Parvati valley, Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, India confirms the earlier chromosome reports
A molecular cytogenetic analysis of chromosome behavior in Lilium hybrids
TLDR
The equal segregation of reciprocal and non-reciprocal recombinant product showed that the intergenomic recombination in the sexual polyploidized progenies was indeed from a natural process-chiasmata formation and crossovers and hence, should not be considered as translocations as was suggested in literature for intergenome recombination.
Occurrence of viable unreduced pollen in a Begonia collection
TLDR
Flow cytometric data proved that large pollen were observed with a rather spherical than normal ellipsoidal shape and were associated with 2n ploidy levels, although they were not always viable.
Occurrence of Univalents and Abnormal Spindle Activity in the Meiocytes in Impatiens devendrae Pusalkar from Western Himalayas
TLDR
The male meiotic course, microsporogenesis and pollen formation of Impatiens devendrae Pusalkar, the species, which is endemic to the state of Uttarakhand, has been worked out for chromosome counts for the first time.

Somatic hybrid plants of Nicotiana glauca and Nicotiana tabacum obtained by protoplast fusion
TLDR
Results of isoenzyme analysis showed bands of both parents and a specific (hybrid) band for aspartate amino-transferase of somatic hybrids exhibited intermediate characters between parental species with respect to leaf morphology, trichome density, floral structure and flower color.
