The ethanol-inducible form of cytochrome P-450 (P-450IIE1) has previously been shown to exhibit an unusually high rate of oxidase activity with the subsequent formation of reactive oxygen species, e.g., hydrogen peroxide, and to be the main contributor of microsomal oxidase activity in liver microsomes from acetone-treated rats [Ekström & Ingelman-Sundberg (1989) Biochem.
